A solid 8/10 controller. For someone who has 3 OEM controllers I would say this does some things better but definitely struggles in other areas. In terms of third party controllers it’s probably the best around.
What it does better than Sony’s Official DualShock 3 is that it’s got a much better weight balance. Not heavy at all but not super light and fragile either. The Goldilocks zone for sure.
The second thing is it feels much more comfortable to hold in your hands, something that only becomes even more noticeable the longer you play. A massive plus for someone like me who games for 5 plus hours a day.
The negatives are obvious if you still have a working OEM controller to compare with, the Retro Fighters Defender has more input lag, not a massive amount but for sure noticeable when trying to rapidly press buttons in half a second or less. For example on GTA IV when trying to use your phone to hit the options menu it would often have a very slight delay meaning you would end up hitting “six axis tutorial” which teleports Niko across the map and there is no reversing it. Not ideal. The lag seems only around 100-150ms (maybe less I haven’t tested it) but if you come straight from the OEM then for sure you have to slow down ever so slightly. The second drawback is the L1 R1 buttons. They are not sensitive enough and so have to be pressed with more pressure than usual. Again something you get used to after about an hour or 2. The D-Pad isn’t great but it does the job, not something I will be using a lot with the games I play but if you’re a massive fighting game or retro games fan this might be a dealbreaker. The final thing is the L2 R2 have a rather sharp edge compared to the OEM and this once again gets some getting used to. I would love to see a redesign of these buttons making it more rounded. In terms of sensitivity these buttons are LESS sensitive than the OEM which is great. I heard a lot of people saying on YouTube they were too sensitive but I completely disagree. They have pressure triggers so it has to be this way and the official Sony controllers were just too sensitive for my liking. In terms of battery I believe you get more than stated, as I have been using mine for 6 hours straight and it hasn’t even dropped one bar yet. I would estimate the battery life to be 12-15 hours or maybe even more. This can vary between each unit of course but mine seems perfect. Overall a really solid controller with some obvious drawbacks however if you want a more comfortable and much better weighted controller, great battery life and all the features of the OEM controller then I would highly recommend this. If you don’t have an Official controller at all then this is simply a must have.

The only thing I wanna improve – decrease sensivity of L2/R2 buttons by
firmware update. They click by simple touching. If I’m not wrong – this could be fixed jusy by firmware update
Work as intended as a bluetooth controller for my ps3, however the six axis functionality is less than desirable and unable to fully play gyro game (I was unable to play Super Rub Dub)
Inferior to a genuine OEM controller for many reasons. The analog sticks do not have the same range as OEM, especially in diagonal directions. This makes it problematic for selecting weapons in Ratchet & Clank games. When required to shake the controller in Ratchet & Clank Future Tools of Destruction (when prompted to “Shake your booty”), the controller doesn’t respond correctly like OEM.
I started up my old PS3 and needed a new controller, but it’s hard finding a replacement. I’m very happy with this one! Sometimes I need to press the R1 button or the d-pad a little harder than usual, but no big deal. Might even buy another one!
